On a Monday, a Monday, a Monday

Despite the crushing pain of not getting a 4th consecutive post on Friday I managed to overcome and have a good weekend anyway.

On Friday night Steve and I got two $5 Dominick's Pizza's, one of the best deals in the business, some Bass and IBC and watched The House of Flying Daggers. We had to cut the movie short to head up to Round Lake and watch an amusing independent film, The Godfather of Green Bay, with Danni, Nicole, and Andrew, natives of Green Bay and Nothern Wisconsin. It was a funny little movie about a couple of comics from L.A. hoping to get noticed by a booker for the Tonight Show at a little bar in Northeast Wisconsin. To make matters worse, one of the comics grew up in Chicago and it's the weekend of the Bears/Packers game (a big deal). Also the Chicago guy is falling for a women who's dating a drug dealer known as the Godfather of Green Bay who's being tracked by a hitman from L.A. Much hilarity and parody of Northwoods life ensues.

On Saturday I got together with a couple of guys from my youth small group and watched The Day After Tomorrow projected on a big screen at church and ate pizza. We also tossed the aerobie in the parking lot where we managed to get it stuck on the roof and in two separate trees. Fortunately we were able to get it down all three times. It is truly the world's most easily overthrown object. Afterwards Steve and I got in a game of disc golf, good for me but bad for him, before going to Jason and Bonnie's for games. We got to play Carcassonne, Boggle, and Speed Scrabble before going home and watching Tombstone. In a rare reversal I went to bed almost an hour before he did.

Sunday we heard a sermon from John M. on Jonah 2 and God's response in crises. After church we went out to Wildberry with friends including Becca and Matt who were up for the weekend from Champaign. Becca used to work with the youth group and hosted my LIFEgroup for a year or so. Later that night I joined some folks from church and we watched the Bears shellac the Seahawks. With the Colts winning earlier both my teams are undefeated.

Verse of the day:
"My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have one who speaks to the Father in our defense—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One." 1 John 2:1 (NIV)

Quote of the Day:
"That's a good question."
"I know. I asked it."
-interchange among a couple of coworkers on Friday.

I have a question about disc golf. When you throw the thing at a particular target, what happens when you miss? Does the other player try to catch it, or do you just let it drop wherever, go over there, pick it up, and throw it again? I'm glad to see you're getting some exercise on your weekends! Love you.

Wow! You posted on a Monday!!!! I'm in shock. Quick, somebody get the defibrillator, my heart just stopped! LOL!

And good question, Tooz. I wondered that myself.

Hopefully the fact that you posted on a Monday doesn not mean you consider your blogging duty done for the week.

Do other golfers try to catch the ball when somebody misses the hole? It's the same principle as ball golf. You start from a tee and count the number of throws required to get it into the basket (or hit the target). So you throw from the tee, go to where it landed, pick it up, throw again, go to where it landed, pick it up etc. The course Steve and I usually play on averages par 4 over 9 holes. You wouldn't really want to catch golf discs, they're harder and usually going faster than a typical frisbee.

I don't know why, but reading about the aerobie (whatever the heck that is) reminded me of two things--the balsa glider we bought during governor's cup that we flied in front of some high school on a biting cold day till it crashed; and some jelly ball we picked up during a speech tournament that you threw in the cafeteria and it got sucked up by the acoustic tile. Did you know the ball eventually came down, but left a stain on that tile that lasted years? It used to be my private joke during senior year--all the young'ns would wonder where that stain came from and I would just smile and chuckle to myself.

I imagine the ball went "schllick!" when it hit the tile, sort of the same sound I make when sucking jello through my bottom teeth.

What with Everett's singular "women" (for the second time) and Becca's "flied," I wonder about you people.

i don't think i knew you were a disc golfer. geron is too and highly enjoys it. we've got some great courses down here, ones only five minutes from the house. you two might have to go play a few rounds next time you're down

Good catch on those, Ann! I was going to comment on that myself. I'm thinking their braininess doesn't run to grammar and spelling. Perhaps one could say their intelligence lies in their ability to recall trivia at lightning speed. Ms. Moore would be so proud!

That glider was fun. I don't really remember the jelly ball though. Glad to know I encouraged perplexity in future generations. An aerobie is a flying ring. It's flat and made of a rubberish substance and is a little bit bigger than an ultimate frisbee. That fly very far and very fast. Because they're so aerodynamic it's very easy to throw one farther than you intended, hence the name, "The World's Most Easily Overthrown Object." They're also very sensitive to the mechanics of the of the throw so if you've got a slice or a hook they go a long way you didn't intend. Because of the substance they're made of they don't float. I lost one to a slightly flooded creek in Mundelein several years ago. Finally because they're rings it's real easy to get one caught in a tree. The day after I bought this one we took it to the park where a friend threw it into a tree. We spent nearly an hour throwing sticks up there to try to knock it out to no avail. A week or so later my friends returned to the park and saw that the aerobie had fallen down a few branches so Anthony climbed the tree and retrieved the ring. They're a lot of fun but you have to be careful.

Geron and I talked about going disc golfing while y'all were at the shower when we were there in July. We decided to go to the used bookstore instead. I'm a more avid book buyer than golfer. I look forward to playing with him sometime.

Who all were in the shower?!?

And I apologize. Apparently, the proper past tense of "fly" I was looking for just flew right out of my head.

Everett said...

At the shower, not in the shower, at the shower. I think the preposition makes an huge difference there.

Jenn-Jenn, the Mother Hen said...

LOL! Yes, pay attention to context clues such as the prepositions!

Well, split my participle and call me Spanky!

Clearly, I have identified myself as the grammar queen of the blogs.
