Verse of the Day and Surprise Visitor

"I will give thanks to you, O LORD, among the peoples;
I will sing praises to you among the nations.
For your steadfast love is great above the heavens;
your faithfulness reaches to the clouds." Psalm 108:3-4 (ESV)

Yesterday around noon I was sitting at my desk at work when a stroller with a cute baby was pushed into my office. I looked at the stroller and baby and the arm sticking in the doorway wondering who in the world it could be. I looked at Cindee, who could see the person, but she wasn't saying anything. The arm was tan enough to be Asian but the baby wasn't. After a suitably dramatic pause my friend Kit poked the rest of himself through the door. Apparently as he had approached the door he had his finger over his lips so Cindee wouldn't give him away. I was stunned but very happy. Kit lives in Australia but is on holiday with his wife and their 7 month old son. When he's not surfing or fishing he teaches theology at a college in Australia and is beginning work on a Ph.D. Cindee and I went out to lunch with Kit and his family at Dominick's and we had a good time getting caught up. Kit, Cindee, and I had all been security guards together and Kit and I had lived together at the synagogue. It was a good time. Tonight I'll be joining Kit, Robyn, and another former synagogue boy, Steve, at Buffo's in Highwood for some double decker pizza. Before he had gone back home to Australia 4 years ago Kit had threatened to kick my butt if I transferred from the M.Div. to the M.A.R. program. I finally figured I was safe, made the transfer, and graduated. He was in Australia, what was he gonna do, right? Then he shows up in my office. Fortunately he didn't make good on the threat. I'm looking forward to pizza tonight.

LOL! You so funny, Ann!

Enjoy the pizza! Oh, and I meant to ask you, since you live near Chicago and all - What's the difference between authentic Chicago style pizza and chain-store Pizza (Pizza Hut, Papa John's, etc?)

I remember Kit, I think...That was eons ago!

The most obvious characteristics of authentic Chicago-style pizza are its basic deliciousness and superiority to all other pizzas. Actually it is that it is about 2-3" deep and the order is crust, cheese, topping, sauce. Most other pizzas are built crust, sauce, cheese, topping. So you've got this thick bread crust overlaid with cheese and toppings and the topped with tomato pizza sauce. Since you asked I'm thinking about a pizza-based post tonight.

Yeah, Tara, I'm pretty sure y'all met Kit when you visited the fall before your wedding.

Okay, when Jamie and I come up to Chicago this fall, we're DEFINITELY going to hit a pizza joint!

One year on The Amazing Race, the final task in Chicago was to go to Geno's and eat a small pizza (split between each team of two). I'm watching the show going, "Heck, yeah, let me at it!" You figure these people haven't eating that well--chow down!

I was amazed how many of them had trouble finishing. They'd start out strong, but by the end, they were forcing it down and ready to be sick.

One guy--he was so funny--he started complaining because he didn't eat cheese and didn't like tomatoes. His girlfriend had no patience for it--she told him to sit down, shut up, and eat. Quickly.

Oh, yeah, I could have won that million.

Is Geno's a good pizza place, Everett? Or do you have a different favorite pizza place? Am I going to be a Chicago-style pizza convert, and never want pizza hut ever again?
